In Switzerland, vehicles between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg require a Category C1 licence.
If driving goods vehicles over 3.5 t
Any truck over 3,500 kg requires a Category C licence to operate.
If towing a trailer over 750 kg with C vehicle
Category CE allows operation of a C-class vehicle with a trailer over 750 kg.
If driving buses with more than 8 passengers
Driving buses with seating for more than 8 passengers requires a Category D licence.
If driving medium buses with up to 16 passengers
Vehicles designed for 9 to 16 passengers require a Category D1 licence.
If towing trailers over 750 kg with D vehicles
Category DE allows a bus or coach with a trailer over 750 kg.
If towing trailers over 750 kg with D1 vehicles
Category D1E covers small buses with trailers over 750 kg.
If operating a vehicle for hire or reward
Drivers for commercial transport must hold a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
If applying for C1 or C1E licence
Drivers must be at least 18 years old to apply for C1/C1E licences.
If applying for C or CE licence
Drivers must be at least 21 years old to hold a C or CE licence.
If applying for D or DE licence
Drivers must be at least 24 years old to drive large buses for passenger transport.
If applying for D1 or D1E licence
Drivers must be at least 21 years old to hold a D1 or D1E licence.
If completing professional driver training
Professional truck and bus drivers must complete an initial CPC qualification.
If holding an EU/EFTA driving licence
Foreign EU/EFTA licences can be exchanged without re-testing if valid.
If from non-EU/EFTA country
Non-EU/EFTA licence holders must pass Swiss tests for conversion.
If operating with hazardous materials
Drivers transporting dangerous goods must hold an ADR certificate.
If operating public passenger services
Bus drivers must meet passenger transport licensing requirements.
If operating oversized or heavy loads
Loads exceeding Swiss legal limits require special authorisation.
If holding C1 licence for 2 years
Experience on C1 can lead to progression to C after meeting requirements.
If holding D1 licence for 2 years
D1 licence holders can progress to D after required experience and training.
If renewing C or D licence
Group 2 licence holders must undergo medical checks at renewal.
If over 50 years old
From age 50, medical exams are required every 5 years for commercial licences.
If over 70 years old
After age 70, Group 2 licence holders require annual medical checks.
If medical fitness not met
Failure to meet Group 2 medical standards can result in suspension.
If holding expired CPC
An expired CPC invalidates a commercial driving entitlement.
If CPC is due for renewal
CPC renewal requires 35 hours of approved training every 5 years.
If failing to renew CPC on time
Commercial driving may only resume after CPC renewal.
If eyesight test fails
Adequate vision is mandatory for Group 2 licence holders.
If licence is revoked
Revoked licences require re-testing and medical clearance before reissue.
If temporarily unfit due to illness
Health conditions that impair safe driving must be resolved before resuming.
